Cross Country
Cross country skiing
Cross country skiing is a popular winter sport and is carried out in many countries including Lapland. Cross country skiing is a sport where skiers travel across snow covered tracks using skis attached to boots and poles. Cross country skiing is often described as Nordic skiing and in places like Lapland there are miles of tracks which are floodlit in the winter days and evenings.
The skies for cross country skiing are longer and narrower than for downhill skiing and the tip of the cross country skies is turned upwards more than in downhill skis. The boots are specially designed to ensure the ski snaps into the ski comfortably and the boots are actually more like walking boots and are much more comfortable to wear than downhill skiing boots.
Most cross country skiing is done on prepared tracks and these tracks are usually ideal for beginners and expert skiers. Typical ski tracks will include uphill and downhill ski tracks and a middle section where more experienced skiers can overtake novices. The tracks will vary between easy, moderate to the more challenging. The running action where the skis are parallel is the most common action, using the poles to propel the skier across the snow. More experienced skiers will use the diagonal actions where each ski alternatively is kicked out side wards in order to gain more speed. When travelling downhill the skier will have the skis about half a meter apart, legs bent slightly and pole lifted to the side. Most people think speeds cannot be reached with cross country skiing but actually on certain tracks speeds are quite fast.
Cross country skiing is not just confined to designated tracks and much skiing is carried out across frozen lakes and other areas. Cross country skiing is a real fitness boost but also great fun and a good alternative to downhill skiing.
Children are often very good at cross country skiing as with downhill skiing they take to it remarkably well. Boots and equipment can be hired for a small fee and children are usually well catered for. In Lapland cross country skiing is common place and it is normal to see many locals skiing down to the supermarket or other places. Skiing over a frozen lake is surreal and very enjoyable especially under the half light of the twilight in the winter months and then when you are hungry; you can stop off and have a well earned bite to eat and a drink.

Cross Country?
I run track already and planning to do that for my next three years of high school along with cross country. However, I am not that clear on exactly what cross country involves. Info please. Also, what other sport should I take that will help me improve my running ability? Oh, and I run long distance in track btw.
It's simply running, and you run over anything in front of you. Practices on my team consisted mostly of running around town (concrete), sometimes on the track and other times around local parks. Competitive races are similar but the distance varies per course, usually it's 3.1 miles but I've run on courses as low as 2.6 and as high as 3.5 as official races (Pennsylvania). In those races you can find everything from streams, hills (sometimes large up and down hills), fences, streets, houses, port-o-johns, basically anything. The courses is laid out ahead of time but there are no lane assignments nor like in track (which someone else mentioned above) so you have some leway on where you wish to run your course (not much because you can get disqualified).
Practices will vary by team. Some will run between 2-7 miles per day with varying drills and others will run 5-10 miles a day. I personally find a good mix to be the best trained teams.
You area distance runner so there aren't that many options to train you for distance. Most other sports involve sprinting which is good exercise and a good workout every now and then but I don't think a whole season of short sprinting will help you. Soccer might be a possibility, that is more sustained sprinting but your endurance might be an asset, depending on when your Soccer season is. Swimming would be another sport to consider, low impact cadio and it trains all of your muscles but that is usually in the winter for us and wouldn't be an alternative to track (if you run winter track that is). I wouldn't recommend wrestling or football, strength is important to your running but you might run the risk of getting top heavy and hurting your running times.
For Distance running, XC really is the better of the options but varying workouts, like sprinting and swimming really do help. Best of luck to you, I found XC to be much more fun as usually the team is smaller and you train together all the time so you all sort of bond in your grueling workouts and you just have a ball. We had the best time at invitationals with other teams after the race.
