Calling Every Beginner Triathlete - Don't Call It Triathalon Training
There is one word in the world of triathlons that every beginner triathlete needs to learn before they ever put on a pair of running shoes, hop on their bike or don a pair of goggles. The word is TRIATHLON. Read it very carefully. This may seem like an odd subject to write about but so many beginner triathletes could save themselves a little bit of embarrassment by not calling it triathalon training.
It's NOT called triathalon training! There is only one letter "a" in the word triathlon. It is not triath-a-lon! Try showing up to your first event and call it "triathalon training" and see how many professionals give you any respect or even notice. Only other beginners will not notice your flub. So remember this first, its triathlon.
What else can I do to not look like a brand new beginner triathlete on race day?
The best thing is to be prepared. Find a race day checklist and make sure that you have everything ready to go the night before in your triathlon bag. This will help you to get to the race early and set up your race area. You want to make sure and have some system set up so that your race area isn't a complete mess. This means having everything set up in a specific manner to minimize the amount of time you must spend in the transition area. You will want a mat that has your running shoes, hat, sunglasses and any other paraphernalia readily available when you exit the water and when you come off your bike.
If you really want to look like you aren't a beginner triathlete then have your bike shoes attached to your bike pedals. You will need to practice this technique often before race day as it can take quite a bit of time to learn how to mount your bike and get your shoes on while you are on the run. The average new triathlete will spend over 5 minutes in the transition area between legs of the race and this can be reduced dramatically by preparing ahead. It is generally a whole lot easier for a person to shave minutes off transition time as opposed to shaving minutes off their swim time. Another easy way to shave some time off your race is by having running shoes that don't require lacing up and skip the socks!

Do triathlon runners wear socks?
Often when watching triathlons you see the athletes come out of the water at the transition point and just slide into a pair of shoes, you never see socks, and they never tie thier shoe laces, wouldn't the shoe be too loose
Yes. Coolmax is the most common type of sock.
But whether an athlete chooses to wear them depends on the goals and conditioning of the athlete as well as the distance of the race. The more experienced triathletes do not bother with socks for anything up to Olympic distance races. It saves about 30+ seconds in transition. When your competition has 20 second transition times at the elite level....
The prudent triathlete will wear coolmax socks for training, at Oly, ultra and Iron distance for the bike and the run so as to minimize the risk of blisters and injury. Unless 30 seconds can get you a podium finish or a Kona slot it isn't really worth the risk of running with a painful (time killing-->bleeding-->debilitating) blister for 13.1 or 26.2 miles.
